Careless Driving

Careless driving occurs when a driver’s standard of driving falls below what would be expected of a competent and careful driver. Under Section 3 of the Road Traffic Act 1988, this may include actions such as failing to pay proper attention, driving too close to another vehicle, or being distracted while driving.

A careless driving conviction can result in between 3 and 9 penalty points, an unlimited fine, or in some cases a driving disqualification. The exact penalty depends on the seriousness of the driving, the circumstances of the incident and any aggravating factors.
